WHAT IS COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT)?

  • According to CBT thoughts, emotions, bodily sensations, and behaviours are interconnected (i.e., what we do and think influences the way we feel).
  • Research has shown that CBT is an effective treatment for many concerns including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, phobias, obsessive compulsive disorder, and depression.
  • CBT is about the here-and-now. The focus is on treating current symptoms.
  • It is a skills based therapy. New skills are introduced to manage concerns and practice is needed to apply the skills to daily life. The more you practice using the skills the easier it gets.
  • It is a collaborative approach. You and your psychologist in Calgary will work towards gaining an understanding of your symptoms, collaboratively develop a treatment plan, and work together to effectively integrate skills into your daily life.
  • It is time limited. Therapy is not lifelong. You will eventually become your own therapist.
