Prolotherapy in Calgary AB

Prolotherapy may be a great option for you if you suffer from chronic pain in Calgary AB, unresolved joint pain, recurrent injuries, joint instability and decreased mobility. Dr. Scott Dainty, ND has many years and over 1000 patients of experience providing prolotherapy in Calgary. He takes great care in ensuring his patients get the right treatment for their injury.
WHAT IS PROLOTHERAPY IN CALGARY AB?
Prolotherapy is a non-surgical treatment for joint pain. It is a regenerative therapy, meaning it stimulates the body's natural healing response in areas of injured tendons, ligaments, and cartilage. By injecting injured ligaments, tendons, and/or cartilage with a mild irritant (dextrose), a mild inflammatory response is triggered to give the body a second chance at healing. This controlled inflammation creates stronger and healthy tendons, ligaments, and/or cartilage. When function in a joint is restored, pain is decreased and mobility is returned.

IS PROLOTHERAPY SAFE?
Prolotherapy is a natural, drug-free treatment for joint pain, largely considered very safe. Although the procedure does come with risks, when compared to common alternatives: surgery, cortisone injections, or no treatment; prolotherapy is considered a low risk treatment with a greater upside.
WHAT TO EXPECT
- Consultation: We will discuss your pain and injury in depth, as well as your health history and other relevant factors.
- Assessment: We will do a thorough physical exam of the affected joints to determine which structures are involved in your pain.
- Treatment: Treatment options will be discuss and agreed upon before starting therapy, but may be started in the same appointment.
- Recovery: There is an expected increase in pain and inflammation following the treatment that lasts for about 1-3 days in most patients.
PROLOTHERAPY VS CORTICOSTEROID INJECTIONS
Unlike corticosteroid (cortisone) injections, prolotherapy injections work by healing inquired tissue. Cortisone manages pain by decreasing inflammation, and works in about 30-50% of cases. For some people cortisone injections work well at first, and only 1-3 injections should be considered. However, over time with repeated injections the effectiveness of cortisone decreases. Additionally, cortisone has the potential to break down tissue. Prolotherapy is a great alternative to steroid injections in Calgary.
PROLOZONE
Prolozone is a combination of prolotherapy (dextrose) and ozone joint injections. The procedure is largely the same as prolotherapy, simply with the addition of an ozone injection after the high concentration dextrose solution. It is performed during the same injection, so you won't be needled twice in the same area. The addition of ozone adds to the tissue regenerative potential of prolotherapy, increasing its effectiveness.
