What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an ideal adjunct to chiropractic care. Conceived in ancient China, acupuncture based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) involves the insertion of very fine needles into various points on the body known as acupuncture points. TCM Acupuncture works with the meridians that run through the body. These meridians are pathways, in which Qi flows. When this Qi (or energy) becomes disrupted, whether through blockages, deficiencies, or excesses, illness occurs in the body. TCM Acupuncture promotes the flow of both Qi and blood, thereby producing better health and vitality. Acupuncture promotes the body’s own natural healing mechanism. The acupuncture needles used are sterile, single-use needles that are disposed of after each session.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

From a Western Medicine point of view, acupuncture points are sites where an acupuncturist can stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue. Inserting needles into these points attracts blood flow to the area which is very nourishing and healing. The needle insertion into these points also causes the release of endorphins, thereby assisting the patient with pain relief, and providing an overall sense of well-being. TCM and Acupuncture stimulates the nervous system and can also help to improve the immune system.

What Can I Expect?

A registered Acupuncturist will assess your health based on observation, palpation, auscultation, and listening to what you have to say about your symptoms and health in general. This includes taking a thorough health history, as well as taking pulse and looking at the tongue. The tongue and pulse can reveal a great deal about the body and any imbalances taking place as a whole. Once the intake has been completed, the acupuncturist will create a diagnosis and treatment plan. The treatment could incorporate any number of therapies, including acupuncture, acupressure, cupping, gua sha, moxibustion, tui na, Chinese herbs, and suggestions regarding dietary therapy as well lifestyle advice.
